It's the last sliver of Italy before Slovenia, in the municipality of <span data-no-translation>Duino Aurisina \u2014 Devin-Nabre\u017eina<\/span>a few hundred metres separate the trenches of the Great War from the white cliffs, a river that re-emerges from the bowels of the earth from a beach where a finish line is reached in August. The Sardon Run doesn't simply cross this territory: it's made of its very substance. This page tells of the places; you can find the routes of the five races in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sardon.run\/en\/races\/\">respective pages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"sr-band sr-band--tint\" aria-label=\"The Timavo\">\n<div class=\"sr-wrap\">\n<div class=\"sr-sechead\">\n<p class=\"sr-eyebrow\">The mystery river<\/p>\n<h2>The Timavo<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">The Timavo river originates in Croatia, sinks into the \u0160kocjan Caves in Slovenia, and travels nearly forty kilometres underground before re-emerging in San Giovanni di Duino. From there, it's just two kilometres to the sea: it's the river with the shortest estuary in Italy. Virgil mentioned it three times, and in the Aeneid, he describes it as it erupts \u201cthrough nine mouths with a loud roar\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">A short distance from the springs opens the Cave of the god Mithras, the only known underground Mithraic temple in Italy: discovered in 1965, it housed altars, stelae, and over four hundred coins from a cult that remained active from the 1st to the 5th century AD. The Sardon races run alongside the river mouths for the first few kilometres, when the group is still compact and fast.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"srcd-ph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sardon.run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/carso-di-duino-risorgive-timavo.jpg\" alt=\"The springs of the Timavo at San Giovanni di Duino: clear water among the vegetation\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"sr-band\" aria-label=\"Mount Ermada\">\n<div class=\"sr-wrap\">\n<div class=\"sr-sechead\">\n<p class=\"sr-eyebrow\">The natural fortress<\/p>\n<h2>Mount Ermada<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">Three hundred and twenty-three metres that are worth an entire story. During the Great War, Mount Ermada was the southern defensive pivot of the Isonzo front: thirty kilometres of trenches, observation posts, and natural caves adapted into shelters \u2013 the Grotta del Fuoco, the Karl and Zita caves, and the Grotta dell\u2019Ospedale. During the Tenth Battle of the Isonzo, Italian artillery poured a million bombs onto its buttresses in a single day: the mountain held, and was never conquered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">Today it is the only place in the Karst where Austro-Hungarian trenches remain exactly as the soldiers left them at the end of the war: an open-air museum crossed by the race, following the crest, passing through <span data-no-translation>Case Kohi\u0161\u010de<\/span>, the stone village where time has stood still among the ancient residences of the Torre and Tasso princes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"srcd-ph srcd-ph--v\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sardon.run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/carso-di-duino-trincee-ermada.jpg\" alt=\"Runners in the trenches of the Great War dug into the rock of Mount Hermada\" width=\"933\" height=\"1400\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"sr-band sr-band--tint\" aria-label=\"The Rilke Trail\">\n<div class=\"sr-wrap\">\n<div class=\"sr-sechead\">\n<p class=\"sr-eyebrow\">The Terrace on the Adriatic<\/p>\n<h2>The Rilke Trail<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">Between October 1911 and April 1912, the Prague poet <span data-no-translation>Rainer Maria Rilke<\/span> stayed at the castle of <span data-no-translation>Duino-Devin<\/span>, guest of the princess <span data-no-translation>Maria von Thurn und Taxis<\/span>. Walking along these cliffs, he heard in the wind the words that would give rise to the Duino Elegies, one of the pinnacles of 20th-century European poetry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">The path that bears his name today runs for more than two kilometres overlooking the Adriatic, within the Duino Cliffs Nature Reserve: the white limestone plunges sixty metres into the blue. The CAI 79 trail \u2013 the Abramo Schmid Trail \u2013 follows the Morgan Line, the provisional border drawn by the Anglo-Americans at the end of the Second World War, along which Allied patrols walked on a double curb of stones to avoid trespassing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">The long trails of the Sardon follow the old path of the 'garnicciari', the collectors of karst gravel, running exactly on the line: technically in Slovenia, with one foot still in Italy, between the villages of <span data-no-translation>Medeazza-Medjevas<\/span> e <span data-no-translation>Ceroglie-Cerovlje<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"srcd-ph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sardon.run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/carso-di-duino-sentiero-ermada.jpg\" alt=\"Path recessed between moss-covered rocks in the Monte Ermada woods\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"sr-band sr-band--tint\" aria-label=\"Villaggio del Pescatore Island\">\n<div class=\"sr-wrap\">\n<div class=\"sr-sechead\">\n<p class=\"sr-eyebrow\">Start and finish<\/p>\n<h2>Villaggio del Pescatore Island<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">Everything begins and ends at the Villaggio del Pescatore Island: start from the sea, finish on the beach. Behind, the Cernizza woods \u2013 where in 1994 Antonio was discovered, a <span data-no-translation>Tethyshadros insularis<\/span> lived seventy million years ago, the most complete medium-large dinosaur discovered in Europe since 1878, today at the Civic Museum of Natural History of Trieste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"srcd-txt\">Above the bay, the trenches of Punta Bratina, an identifying passage for every Sardon race: from up there the view encompasses the Staranzano lagoon, the Village and the profile of the castle of <span data-no-translation>Duino-Devin<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure
